  • Allerton Concert Series – Summer Kick Off Concert
    6:00 PM-9:00 PM
    2017.06.02
515 Old Timber Road, Monticello, IL, United States

    Summer Kick Off Concert

    Friday, June 2
    6pm – 9pm
    Gate House Lawn

6pm The Bashful Youngens | 7:30pm Birds of Chicago

About the bands: “Birds of Chicago, the collective centered around Allison Russell and JT Nero, reassert the simple notion – radical in these times – that beautiful words and music can still tap deep veins of emotion. Stark, elemental imagery that feels like scripture, or a lost folk song recovered; the Birds draw heavily on the gospel tradition and the music feels like a new, secular gospel of sorts. For Birds of Chicago, every word counts. Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler. Music is the good news and Real Midnight, the band’s poignant new Joe Henry produced album, throbs with an urgency that feels quietly seismic.. Music this raw and soul-rich demands to be experienced live…”

The Bashful Youngens are an Americana duo out of Champaign, Illinois featuring Carrie Chandler-Harrison (mandolin, guitar, vocals) and Aaron Short (harmonica, guitar, vocals). Their style blends traditional folk, alternative country, and roots while incorporating their own unique musicality for an eclectic mix. Their love of writing music together is clearly seen and heard in their live performances and studio recordings. Each shines on their own, and together their voices blend in seemingly effortless harmonies. Their genuine, charming style, well-crafted songs, powerful rhythms and harmonies provide a sound that reaches a broad base of fans.”

6pm The Blues Deacons | 7:30pm The Cash Box Kings

About the bands: “Hailing from the ‘Windy City,’ Blind Pig recording artists The Cash Box Kings are keeping real deal, old-school Chicago blues alive and thriving. The band is dedicated to carrying on the spirit of the 1940’s and 50’s post-war Chicago blues sound as well as the Delta blues music of the 20’s and 30’s. But these illustrious torch bearers also add a bravado, energy and freshness to the mix that results in a distinctive musical experience and a high-energy stage show… The band regularly headlines Chicago venues like Buddy Guy’s, Rosa’s and Smoke Daddy as well as major festivals all over the world like the Chicago Blues Festival, the Cambridge Folk Festival (UK) and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.”

The Blues Deacons have been a mainstay of the downstate Illinois blues scene since forming in 1990. Together, three veteran musicians form a tight blues machine while retaining a raw, soulful edge. When the East Central Illinois Blues Club was asked to send a representative to “Bluestock,” a Memphis showcase of blues bands from across the country and around the world, the Blues Deacons were chosen… With a huge catalog of material including originals, eclectic/lesser-known covers, well-worn classics, and modern blues hits, the Deacons are very adept at tailoring a live show to the venue at which they’re booked.”
